The Role
The Functional Lead – Commercial (Retail) is responsible for driving end-to-end solution design, process optimisation, and implementation of SAP S/4HANA Commercial/SD processes within a retail environment. This role acts as the primary bridge between business stakeholders and the SAP technical teams, ensuring that commercial processes are aligned with business goals, industry best practices, and S/4HANA capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Solution Design & Delivery
- Lead design workshops for Order-to-Cash (O2C), pricing, promotions, retail master data, and integration with POS/e-commerce systems.
- Translate business requirements into functional specifications for S/4HANA.
- Drive the configuration of SAP SD and retail-related commercial processes.
- Ensure solutions adhere to SAP best practices, industry standards, and enterprise architecture.
Implementation & Project Execution
- Lead the SAP S/4HANA Commercial workstream through design, build, testing, training, and go-live.
- Create and maintain configuration documents, functional specs, test scripts, and user manuals.
- Manage integration with SAP CAR, SAP Retail, SAP MM, finance (FI), and third-party retail systems (OMS, POS, WMS).
Business Partnering
- Work closely with merchandising, sales, supply chain, finance, and store operations teams.
- Provide expert guidance to business stakeholders on process improvements and retail-specific commercial flows.
- Facilitate UAT sessions and support end users during stabilisation.
Support & Continuous Improvement
- Lead issue resolution, root-cause analysis, and enhancement requests.
- Identify opportunities for automation, process optimisation, and feature adoption in S/4HANA.
- Stay updated on SAP S/4HANA innovations, retail trends, and localisation/legal requirements.
Requirements
Key Skills & Experience Required
- Consulting experience: Experience in a top-tier consulting environment is necessary.
- Functional expertise: Have at least 12-15 years of experience in this area.
- Strong knowledge of:
+ SAP SD (Pricing, Credit Management, Billing, ATP, Deliveries). + Retail processes: promotions, assortment, article master, POS integration, pricing hierarchy. + Integration with SAP MM, FI, CAR, e-commerce, and OMS.
- Experience in greenfield, brownfield, or rollout S/4HANA projects.
- Industry experience: Experience in Retail, Fashion, Grocery, or Consumer Goods organisations.
- Understanding of multi-channel and omnichannel retail operations.
- Technical capabilities: Ability to write and review functional specifications for RICEFW objects.
- Knowledge of IDocs, APIs, and interface technologies.
- Basic familiarity with Fiori apps for O2C.
- Leadership & soft skills: Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Ability to lead functional teams and coordinate with cross-functional workstreams.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to solve complex business problems.
- Project-related mobility/willingness to travel
- Education: SAP certification in SD or S/4HANA (preferred)
