Job Purpose

Leads development activities for assigned group and projects for Honda Racing Corporation. Responsible for the progress of assigned area, reviewing both project targets as well as resource planning and coordination. Directs other development associates both technically as well as functionally.

Key Accountabilities

Development Project Lead

Leads assigned development projects end-to-end, from concept through completion. Owns planning, coordination, data analysis, reporting, and technical judgment. Collaborates cross-functionally (design, simulation, production, program management), takes ownership of issues and hardware failures, and drives root cause analysis and countermeasures to meet targets and timing.

Technical Lead

Owns technical decision-making within a defined area of expertise. Sets and maintains technical direction to meet or exceed project targets, and guides engineers on problem investigation and performance development.

Project & Testing Communication

Provides clear, regular communication on project and testing status. Presents results and plans at each development stage, authors technical reports and summaries, develops manuals and procedures, and maintains project databases.

Development Group Leader

Leads a focused subgroup within the development organization. Manages workload and task assignments, supports performance planning and training, and ensures group objectives are achieved.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, with emphasis on internal combustion engines and/or electrified powertrains. Relevant coursework includes thermodynamics and fluid dynamics.
  • Minimum of 9 years of experience in powertrain development and testing, including product planning, validation, and test cycle development.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in control systems, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, statics and dynamics, and internal combustion engine principles.
  • Experience with powertrain and/or chassis dynamometer testing, data acquisition systems, test instrumentation, and data logging hardware/software is preferred.
  • Proven ability to clearly present technical ideas, data, analyses, and conclusions to a broad range of audiences, both verbally and in written form.
  • Demonstrated experience authoring technical reports and development documentation.
  • Prior project management experience, including use of tools such as Microsoft Project.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in a technical environment.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively under minimal supervision.
  • Self-directed, detail-oriented professional capable of managing multiple priorities and performing well under pressure in a culturally diverse environment.

Decisions Expected

  • Define the direction and process for development of assigned projects.
  • Determine route cause and solution for problems and failures within assigned area and projects.
  • Decide priority for group tasks and manage based on workload

Working Conditions

Physical Demands Requirements:

  • Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist while working.
  • Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees to work on close to the groundwork.
  • Crawling.
  • Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet to work underneath suspended vehicles/engines/equipment to diagnosis problems and or remove replace parts.
  • Standing for sustained periods during work or events.
  • Sitting. Extensive travel and long travels.
  • Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks (particularly walking long distances at the track to pit lane and around shop)
  • Lifting. Raising objects of 25 pounds from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
  • Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers while servicing / maintaining a race engine, vehicles and equipment.
  • The worker is subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to high heat and exposure to chemicals.
