Description
The New York Public Library (NYPL) is seeking a Licensed Maintainer to maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for library users and employees.
Key Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Operations Manager, the Licensed Maintainer:
- Performs repairs, installations, and preventive maintenance of building plant operations consisting of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment and general carpentry across multiple sites and properties of NYPL
- Assesses jobs and determines staffing and materials needs, making recommendations as appropriate
- Picks up supplies and materials as needed
- Assists in training Library Maintainers working on building infrastructure systems
- Tracks time spent on jobs using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
- Performs related duties as required
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Required Education and Certifications
- High School Diploma or GED and advanced courses in plumbing, mechanical, electrical, or refrigeration skills
- FDNY Q-01 certification
- Valid driver's license and good driving record
- Ability to qualify for valid certificates of fitness for: Standpipe and Sprinkler systems; High Rise Fire Safety Director Class E; and Freon Handler (CFC)
Required Experience
- Experience in building trades and operation and maintenance of large-scale heating, air conditioning, elevator, electrical, and plumbing systems
- Experience reading blueprints, circuit diagrams, water flow, and HVAC diagrams
- Supervisory or training experience
- Experience with electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems
Required Skills
- Excellent knowledge of BMS (Building Monitoring System)
- Ability to use testing equipment: multi-meters, flow-meters, gauges, and basic hand tools to diagnose equipment problems
- Ability to do heavy lifting and set up and work from ladders, scaffolds, and electric lifts, maintaining logs, writing reports, and preparing work schedules
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Must pass a physical examination
- Basic knowledge and experience using computers, including email, Microsoft Word, and Excel

Physical Duties
- Remaining stationary for periods of time
- Requires bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting/moving 50 pounds and up
- Ability to ascend/descend ladders or manlift when required
- Extended periods of time (up to 7 hours, including breaks) may be spent sitting, standing, lifting, moving bulky items continuously as needed by assignment with or without using a computer
- Must be able to operate an electric pallet jack
