Description
We are seeking a Senior Thermal Engineer to join our Space team. As a Senior Thermal Engineer, you will own the thermal design, analysis, test, and associated component vendor management of a space hardware development program. You will use first principles as a basis for every decision and discern the right level of analysis to apply. You will execute hand calculations, spreadsheet, and MATLAB/Python first-order models to inform the path forward before jumping into detailed design.
You will define a good thermal architecture to withstand the space environments. You will define and quantify hot, cold, and any other edge cases that drive the system. You will communicate the pros and cons of system architecture with respect to thermal considerations.
You will present thermal status at formal reviews internally and with customers. You will provide a clear understanding of timelines and technical status. You will develop internal tools to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of analysis. You will develop, prepare, and execute thermal tests to inform analysis and reduce risk on key hardware assemblies.
You will develop a database of materials, thermal properties, and vendors of thermal hardware for use in space. You will support failure reviews and root-cause analysis with test data and thermal analysis.
Required qualifications include a BS, MS, or higher degree in engineering, applied physics, or hard science. You must have demonstrated knowledge of heat transfer in an academic and/or professional setting. You must be proficient in Thermal Desktop or an equivalent thermal simulation tool. You must have hands-on experience prototyping hardware and conducting thermal tests. You must have experience with CAD, selecting instrumentation, post-processing data, and correlating models.
Preferred qualifications include 7+ years of professional experience as a thermal analyst using Thermal Desktop. You should have design or test experience on a space platform. You should have experience developing code in higher-level languages like Python or MATLAB for applications like lumped thermal capacitance steady-state and transient analysis.
