Description

The New York Public Library (NYPL) seeks a Young Adult Librarian to empower young adults aged 12-18 to become creative thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and resourceful users of information.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide reference service and resource recommendations using print, media, and digital resources.
  • Collaborate with the Youth Educational Services Department to develop, promote, facilitate, and evaluate innovative programs for young adults.
  • Partner with the collection development team to build and maintain the Young Adult collection.
  • Engage young adults with the collection and encourage them to explore their interests.
  • Conduct outreach to community-based organizations, schools, and local businesses to promote the library's services.
  • Encourage digital literacy and provide age-appropriate technology instruction to young adults.
  • Develop and maintain the young adult space, ensuring a safe and inviting area.
  • Facilitate the work and activities of teen volunteers and teen advisory councils.
  • Develop and maintain content for social media platforms.
  • Mentor library staff in preparing and presenting young adult programs.
  • Assist with circulation, fines and fees management, reserves, and opening/closing procedures.

Required Education and Experience:

  • ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Studies.
  • Public Librarian's Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York.

Required Skills:

  • Strong commitment to public service.
  • Experience creating and conducting innovative programs for young adults.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of young adult literature, audiovisual materials, and computer resources.
  • Experience developing, maintaining, and marketing young adult collections.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Strong organization and planning skills.
  • Strong computer and technology skills.
