Senior Staff Frontend Engineer, Merchant Experience

Job Overview

As a Senior Staff Engineer on the Merchant Experience team at Stripe, you will be a technical leader responsible for shaping the next generation of how Stripe merchants interact with our products. You will drive a step-function improvement in the quality and performance of our core surfaces, and help define what AI-powered merchant experiences look like at Stripe.

Responsibilities

• Define technical strategy for merchant-facing experiences across Stripe, focusing on quality, performance, and AI integration into core user workflows.
• Lead complex, cross-team projects that improve the reliability, responsiveness, and polish of Stripe's merchant surfaces.
• Champion a quality-first engineering culture by establishing standards, tooling, and processes for high-quality UI.
• Drive performance as a product feature, owning the technical approach to making the Dashboard and merchant tools best-in-class in speed and responsiveness.
• Innovate on the future of merchant UX by exploring and prototyping how AI can transform merchant interactions with Stripe products.
• Build platforms and abstractions that make Stripe engineers more productive, such as frameworks, components, and developer tools.
• Partner across Stripe with various teams to translate product vision into a concrete technical roadmap.
• Mentor and grow engineers across the organization, raising the technical bar and fostering a culture of craftsmanship.

Requirements

• Senior Staff role with experience overseeing 4-6 teams and owning a portfolio of products.
• At least 10-15 years of experience in the industry.
• Experience building and shipping complex, user-facing web applications with large-scale audiences.
• Track record of leading large-scale engineering projects with broad organizational impact.
• Deep expertise in modern frontend and full-stack development.
• Demonstrated ability to drive measurable improvements in software quality and performance.
• Experience influencing technical direction and driving alignment across multiple teams.
• Excellent communication skills for articulating technical vision to various stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with design systems, component libraries, or frontend platform infrastructure at scale, ideally with React.
• Interest in the intersection of AI and UX, with critical thinking on emerging technologies.
• Experience with performance engineering, profiling, instrumentation, budgeting, and optimization of modern web applications.
• Familiarity with deploying large web applications at global scale.
• Comfort working across the full stack, including APIs, backend services, and data layers.
• Passion for developer experience and making engineers more productive.
• Experience mentoring senior engineers and contributing to engineering culture and hiring.
• Hands-on experience integrating AI-powered capabilities into user-facing products.
