The base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. If the role is non-exempt, overtime pay will be provided consistent with applicable laws. In addition to the salary range listed above, total compensation also includes generous equity, performance-related bonus(es) for eligible employees, and the following benefits.

The OpenAI API team builds the foundation that enables every developer to harness OpenAI’s models safely, reliably, and at scale. Our mission is to make it effortless for any developer to build transformative products with OpenAI’s models. We’re responsible for the infrastructure and product layers that allow millions of developers to integrate our models, fine-tune behavior, manage data, and deliver experiences to their users. We collaborate deeply across product, research, and engineering teams to drive innovation at the model layer and then directly translate that into value for customers.
About the Role:
As a Model Behavior Product Manager for the API team, you'll be at the forefront of defining and guiding the future of how our AI models behave in real-world applications. You’ll set clear priorities and drive impactful improvements to model capabilities, balancing user needs, safety considerations, and technical innovation. This role is perfect for a proactive, technically adept PM who thrives on solving challenging, ambiguous problems through structured product thinking and close collaboration with customers, engineers, and researchers.
This position is based in San Francisco, CA, with relocation assistance available.
In this role, you will:
- Define strategic priorities and roadmap for improving model behavior for API users, focusing on user outcomes, safety, reliability, and emerging capabilities.
- Partner with research and engineering teams at a technical level to translate those goals into model capability improvements.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to launch OpenAI’s frontier models in the API, and expose their full capabilities to users via flexible and powerful API primitives.
- Develop scalable methodologies, tools, and processes for evaluating, tuning, and iterating on model behavior.
- Synthesize user research, community feedback, and quantitative insights into targeted improvements in our AI models.
- Establish and iterate on clear, actionable metrics that accurately reflect model quality and user experience at scale.

- Have 5+ years of product management or related industry experience.
- Have experience collaborating directly and deeply with high-growth startups.
- Proven track record of building for developers, with strong intuition for designing clear, flexible APIs and primitives that scale from early experimentation to production use.
- Have hands-on experience driving consensus and action in ambiguous spaces.
- Excel at collaborating across diverse teams and communicating complex ideas clearly.
