Description
As a Materials and Failure Analysis (MFA) Engineer at Shield AI, you will be responsible for driving failure analysis investigations and materials characterization activities for the XBAT vehicle.
You will work closely with design, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to lead materials development, understand failure mechanisms, define corrective actions, and eliminate recurrence across product design, manufacturing processes, and supply chain sourcing.
Key responsibilities include:
- Operating and continuously improving world-class materials and failure investigation laboratory equipment, including SEM/EDS, x-ray, CT, optical microscopy, and cross-section preparation
- Developing and implementing lab procedures for materials characterization, failure analysis investigations, and reporting results to stakeholders
- Performing failure analysis on electronic failures and recommending corrective actions
- Driving failure analysis investigations using common methods, including 8D, fault-tree, fishbone, and FRACAS
- Conducting mechanical cross-sectioning and utilizing X-ray inspection methods
- Operating Scanning Electron Microscopes and conducting Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy
- Executing thermal analysis work on materials
- Managing procurement and maintenance of lab consumables
- Overseeing laboratory equipment and work area maintenance, organization, and safety
- Collaborating with external laboratories and educating stakeholders on materials science fundamentals
The ideal candidate will have:
- 2+ years of experience in a materials engineering role, preferably with a focus on aerospace or automotive applications
- A Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or Chemical Engineering
- Familiarity with electronics and moving mechanical assemblies
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong written and oral communication skills
Preferred qualifications include:
- 5+ years of experience in a materials engineering role
- A Master's degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or Chemical Engineering
- Proficiency in failure analysis techniques and materials characterization methods
- Prior experience running a materials characterization and/or failure analysis lab
