Description
In this role, you will be responsible for planning, purchasing, installing, launching, and maintaining heat treatment processes across various sections, including FWD and RWD transmissions, components, axles, and Electrified Powertrain in North America. You will work with cross-functional teams to achieve program targets for cost, quality, and delivery. Your responsibilities will include specifying and procuring equipment and tooling for metallurgical processing, qualifying machines and tools, and implementing machinery and equipment into manufacturing systems. You will also be responsible for developing new materials, heat treatment processing, and welding technology. Additionally, you will support launch phases for manufacturing plants and implement standardized engineered solutions for metallurgical equipment.
Responsibilities
- Lead/Support process engineer for specifying and procuring equipment and tooling for metallurgical processing (carburizing, induction hardening, shot peening, and laser welding).
- Qualify machines/tools/processes and implement the machinery and equipment into mfg. systems in powertrain plants.
- Work within cross-functional teams to achieve program targets for cost, quality, and delivery.
- Participate in and support the development of operating strategies such as plant layouts, machinery spare parts, and visual factory, scrap identification/evaluation/disposal, and improve quality and reduce costs.
- Produce process documentation including process flow charts, process illustrations, PFMEA, DCP, process sheets, visual aids, gauging instructions, control charts, and others.
- Develop new materials/heat treatment processing/welding technology/shot peening.
- Support launch phases for manufacturing plants.
- Implement standardized engineered solutions for metallurgical equipment with lead responsibility for ergonomics, safety, productivity, and process conformity.
- Deploy standard engineering methods in the development and delivery of Metallurgical processes and systems.
- Develop metallurgical processes and procure metallurgical machines for all new model programs.
- Provide manufacturing assessments, cost estimates, and feasibility input to new program management.
- Support continuous improvement of Metallurgical Systems and the introduction of new technologies.
- Develop and maintain Bill of Process elements for all Metallurgical methods and equipment specifications.
- Support Design for Manufacturing guides in conjunction with prototypes and deliver Make-Like-Production (MLP) hardware for prototype builds.
- Develop of new testing routines for Core, Surface & micro hardness, develop new cutting & preparation methods for new Gear models and preliminary assessment of capability results.
- Metallurgical lab analysis of components to support forward and current model programs
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Metallurgical or Materials Engineering preferred).
- 5+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering and metallurgical laboratory analysis of components.
- High volume ferrous based metallurgical processing experience – including heat treatment, welding, and auxiliary surface treatments – combined with hands-on experience with tooling design for those processes.
- Proficiency in heat treatment processes, metallurgy, hardness testing (core, surface, and micro-hardness).
- Strong ability to perform complex failure analysis and interpret technical engineering drawings (including GD&T).
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work in cross-functional teams and interface with suppliers and plant engineering.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle complex projects, equipment procurement, and multiple objectives during launch phases.
- Ability to travel domestically – up to 20%.
- Vacuum carburizing experience.
- Some knowledge of gear machining and metrology is a plus.

Salary and Benefits
This position is a salary grade 7-8 and ranges from $84,480-162,120. Final determination of salary grade will be based on candidate's skills and experience, and base salary will be set within the applicable range according to job scope, responsibility, and competitive market value.
