Senior Data Center Operations Technician

About the Role

As a Senior Data Center Operations Technician at xAI, you will be responsible for maintaining the health of our server and network infrastructure across Data Centers and Global Points of Presence. Your primary focus will be on two key metrics: mean time to detect (MTTD) and mean time to repair (MTTR). You will be skilled at following directions, learning quickly, and paying close attention to details. You will be accessible via cell phone and available to work onsite during emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Report to job sites during initial construction and provide updates to the engineering team as needed.
• Perform troubleshooting and monitoring of servers and networks in data centers and global points of presence.
• Install, rack, and stack data center network equipment.
• Manage warehouse inventory and asset management using our internal application.
• Troubleshoot and label fiber optic cables.
• Handle power supply cabling, installation, troubleshooting, and repair.
• Install racks, servers, and switches, including staging, cabling, powering up, and handing over to the provisioning team.
• Manage data center operations tickets using Jira.
• Create and maintain documentation of tasks and standard operating procedures.
• Oversee receipt and decommissioning of data center hardware.
• Manage vendor returns for infrastructure under and out of warranty.
• Maintain spare parts inventory within the data center.
• Design and implement network layouts and solutions within data centers.

Basic Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
• 5+ years of experience with server, storage, compute, and network hardware.
• 5+ years of experience troubleshooting and repairing servers and networking infrastructure.
• 5+ years of experience in inventory management, ordering, receiving, and shipping server and network equipment.
• Subject to pre-employment drug and random drug and alcohol testing.
• Subject to pre-employment and annual post-employment background checks.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work in tight quarters with physical dexterity.
• Lift up to 35lbs unassisted.
• Comfortable working at elevated heights (up to 50 feet) with safety gear.
• Comfortable working in noisy environments.
• Available to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Strong Linux skills, including navigating directories, manipulating files, user permission configuration, package installation, and basic troubleshooting.
• Experience with bash or other scripting.
• On-call experience and ability to respond to critical events.
• Experience leading data center infrastructure projects.
• Familiarity with Oracle.
• Experience with structured cabling (copper/fiber) and power and cooling concepts in data centers.
