Staff Software Engineer, Service Communications

The Service Communications team at Pinterest manages high-layer networking systems for reliable, secure, and performant service-to-service interactions. We're looking for a Staff Engineer to lead technical strategy across identity, traffic optimization, and platform scaling.

Responsibilities:

• Architect and deploy advanced service mesh features using Envoy proxy.
• Lead organization-wide adoption of service identity and mTLS for critical AAA security requirements.
• Design traffic optimization primitives to reduce data transfer costs.
• Maintain and modernize service framework libraries in Java, Python, and C++.
• Collaborate with service owners to drive adoption and refine infrastructure requirements.
• Partner with infrastructure peers on multi-region and multi-cloud strategies.
• Use AI to accelerate analysis and iteration.
• Join the team on-call rotation for incident response and post-mortems.

Requirements:

• 6+ years of infrastructure or platform engineering experience.
• Deep technical expertise in service mesh technologies like Envoy or Istio.
• Proficiency in multiple languages (Java, Python, C++).
• Strong understanding of service security, including mTLS adoption and identity management.
• Proven ability to design highly available and efficient distributed systems.
• Demonstrated experience driving complex platform capabilities across engineering teams.
• Experience using AI to accelerate engineering workflows.
• Bachelor's/Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
