Description
This Fleet Mechanic - D/P role is part of a developmental program at a Georgia Power Fleet Service Facility. The position involves diagnosing and performing major and minor repairs to gasoline and diesel engines, inspecting and repairing vehicle braking systems, steering mechanisms, and air conditioning systems. The role also requires road testing vehicles, driving trucks or equipment as required, and inspecting vehicles in the shop and field.
The program is a maximum 4-year apprenticeship, with the length of time to complete based on the candidate's current skill level, knowledge, experience, and abilities. The position requires availability and accessibility in times of emergency, including storm duty, which may require working evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and out-of-state travel.
Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and perform major and minor repairs to gasoline and diesel engines
- Inspect and repair vehicle braking systems, steering mechanisms, and air conditioning systems
- Road test vehicles and inspect vehicles in the shop and field
- Diagnose engine, chassis, and drive train systems using PC-based diagnostic equipment
- Perform preventive maintenance work, DOT inspections, and minor and major repairs on various equipment
- Read and interpret manuals, drawings, inspection forms, and specifications
- Perform welding work on vehicles, equipment, and tools
- Fabricate metal parts for vehicles, equipment, and tools
- Straighten and repair bent vehicles, equipment, and tools
- Adhere to safety policies and procedures at all times
- Focus on customer service
Requirements:
- Documented completion of a 2-year vocational/technical school program in automotive or diesel technology study
- OR 4 years or more work experience in a Fleet maintenance facility or military Wheel Vehicle maintenance experience
- ASE certifications, welding and/or hydraulic certifications are a plus
- Ability to perform hydraulic, electronic, mechanical, maintenance, and repairs on medium/heavy-duty trucks, aerial devices, light vehicles, forklifts, and other specialized Fleet equipment
- Ability to use PC-based software to troubleshoot and repair various systems
- Demonstrate effective communication skills, good organizational skills, and be a proven problem solver
- Ability to take instruction/direction and translate into actions
- Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations
- Ability to perform physically demanding activities while working in all types of temperature extremes

Other requirements:
- Must successfully qualify on two pre-employment exams
- Must have a valid State of Georgia Motor Vehicle Driver's License
- Must currently possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class 'A' with air brake certification and a valid DOT Medical Card
- Weight guidelines require a candidate's current body weight to be at or below 280 pounds
- Candidate must be able to lift and/or drag up to 50 lbs. of equipment
- Candidate should meet the physical requirements of the position
- Immediately upon hire, a new employee must bring their own hand tools necessary to perform the job duties
- Candidate must provide proper composite/steel toe shoes or boots
- Candidate must be at least 18 years of age
- Candidate must be available for after-hours support and to work storm duty
