Description

We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the M365 Core team, focusing on Substrate & Work IQ (SWIQ), the trusted data and intelligence platform behind Microsoft 365.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will personally prototype the next generation of customer experiences across the full incident lifecycle, putting agentic AI to work on real operational problems and getting hands-on experience with Microsoft's newest AI technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with stakeholders to determine user requirements for complex scenarios.
  • Provide technical leadership for identifying dependencies and developing design documents.
  • Lead by example and mentor others to produce extensible and maintainable code.
  • Leverage subject-matter expertise to lead multiple product project plans, release plans, and work items.
  • Hold accountability as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), mentoring engineers and working on-call to monitor system health.
  • Proactively seek new knowledge and adapt to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns to improve product availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience.
  • Distributed systems depth: Hands-on expertise designing and shipping large-scale distributed systems.
  • Applied AI/ML: Demonstrated experience applying AI/ML to real production problems.
  • Telemetry & big data: Proven ability to work with large-scale telemetry, observability, or big-data pipelines.
  • Delivery-led influence: Track record of leading through delivery and technical influence across teams.
  • AIOps & incident systems: Experience building AIOps, incident management, monitoring/detection, root-cause diagnosis, or automated mitigation systems.

The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $165,600 – $296,400 per year.
