Principal Software Engineer

We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the M365 Core team, specifically the Observability & Intelligent Cloud (OIC) team. The successful candidate will be responsible for prototyping the next generation of customer experiences across the full incident lifecycle, leveraging agentic AI to solve real operational problems.

The OIC team is critical to keeping Microsoft 365 and Copilot healthy in real-time, monitoring signals, detecting issues, diagnosing problems, and driving mitigation efforts.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will:

• Partner with stakeholders to determine user requirements for complex scenarios
• Provide technical leadership for identifying dependencies and developing design documents
• Lead by example and mentor others to produce high-quality, maintainable code
• Leverage subject-matter expertise to lead project plans, release plans, and work items
• Hold accountability as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), mentoring engineers and working on-call to monitor system health

The ideal candidate will have:

• 8+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
• Experience with large-scale distributed systems, cloud services, or data platforms
• Demonstrated experience applying AI/ML to real production problems
• Ability to work with large-scale telemetry, observability, or big-data pipelines

The base pay range for this role is:

• $165,600 - $296,400 per year (U.S.)
• $220,800 - $331,200 per year (San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area)
