Description
As a Fiber Documentation Engineer at xAI, you will design, document, and optimize fiber optic networks to support our high-performance infrastructure. This is a field-intensive role requiring approximately 50% travel. You will conduct site surveys, produce detailed OSP/ISP designs, manage cross-connects, perform basic fiber testing, and ensure accurate records in our tools.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Documenting and designing fiber networks using IQGeo Network Manager and CAD, including route modeling, data import, and report generation.
- Conducting site surveys and producing detailed OSP (aerial/underground) and ISP (building entry/riser) connectivity designs in GIS and/or CAD.
- Surveying, documenting, and installing/run jumpers for new and existing fiber cross-connects; maintaining accurate records in IQGeo and CAD.
- Performing basic fiber testing with VFL (fault location) and OPM (power/loss measurement); cleaning connectors and inspecting end-faces. Applying basic OTDR skills and interpreting fiber trace reports.
- Collaborating with teams to install and maintain OXC jumpers in a clean and orderly manner.
- Collaborating with teams on projects, permitting, and QA; ensuring compliance with industry standards.
- Working with OSP and Construction teams to create, submit, and/or monitor permits.
To succeed in this role, you will need:
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in fiber optic network design, surveying, testing, and OSP/ISP deployments (experience may substitute for formal education).
- Proficiency with IQGeo Network Manager and CAD or similar geospatial design tools.
- Experience with fiber testing equipment (VFL, OPM) and cross-connect/jumper installations.
- A valid driver's license and physical capability for field work, including walking varied terrain, ladder use, and cable handling.
- Ability to travel ~50%
Preferred skills and experience include relevant certifications such as CFOT or Fiber Optic Technician, strong knowledge of fiber optic standards, connector cleaning/inspection, and jumper/cross-connect routing, experience with NetBox (or similar DCIM/IPAM tools), and excellent analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
