Description
About us
Our purpose is to bring together people, energy and markets to power and navigate a changing world.
We are seeking a Drilling Engineer to plan and deliver safe, efficient and compliant well operations across our Trinidad & Tobago portfolio. The role spans front-end design through execution and close-out, working in a multidisciplinary environment to optimize value, mitigate risk, and uphold the highest standards of well integrity and operational excellence.
Key accountabilities
- Develop drilling programs, basis of design, and well barrier schematics; select casing, mud, and BOP configurations aligned with standards and local laws.
- Lead well start-up activities including rig/vessel intake, assurance verifications, and operational risk assessments; ensure procedures, permits, and contingencies are in place.
- Provide real-time engineering oversight during drilling, completions, and interventions; solve operational issues and implement performance improvements.
- Track KPIs (NPT, ILT, OPEX/CAPEX), benchmark performance, and drive continuous improvement, learning capture, and application to subsequent wells.
- Maintain robust well barrier envelopes; steward well control procedures, drills, and reporting; ensure compliance with well integrity management requirements.
- Identify critical risks and barriers; execute risk mitigation plans; lead and document Management of Change for technical and operational variations.
- Collaborate with PSCM and suppliers on scopes of work, execution plans, and service quality; participate in performance evaluations and after-action learning.
- Ensure alignment to company practices and applicable legislation; prepare regulatory submissions, exemptions, and notifications as required.
- Deliver high-quality end-of-well reports, well files, and lessons learned; contribute to audits, verifications, and technical peer reviews.
- Champion a strong safety culture, intervene on unsafe conditions, and role-model Life-Saving Rules and operational discipline.
Essential experience & technical capability
- Significant experience as a Drilling Engineer in upstream oil & gas, including offshore operations.
- Proficiency in well design, casing design & load cases, hydraulics, BHAs, bits, torque & drag, pore/fracture pressure modeling, and geomechanics application.
- Proven involvement in rig/vessel intake, startup, and supervised execution of drilling operations (e.g., platform, jack-up and/or floating units).
- Practical experience supporting or integrating completion and intervention scopes, including wellhead/x-mas tree systems and tubular handling.
- Deep familiarity with well control principles, barrier philosophy, and incident response.
- Track record of reducing NPT/ILT and improving cost and cycle time through data-driven performance optimization.
- Solid understanding of industry software for well engineering (e.g., hydraulics, anti-collision, torque & drag, trajectory design) and digital reporting systems.
- Strong command of relevant industry standards and regulatory frameworks in offshore drilling.
Desirable / differentiators
- Subsea well experience (design or operations) in addition to platform/jack-up environments.
- Side-track planning and execution exposure.
- Supplier performance management and integrated services coordination.
- Multi-operator or JV experience and effective partner/stakeholder engagement.
Education & certifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Petroleum, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline (or equivalent).
- Well Control certification (IWCF or IADC) at Supervisor level (or obtained within agreed timeframe).
- Valid offshore medical and survival certifications (or ability to obtain).
Success profile (what good looks like)
- Makes risk-based decisions; never compromises on barrier health or well control.
- Anticipates problems, proposes pragmatic contingencies, and acts decisively under pressure.
- Communicates clearly with subsurface, operations, HSE, logistics, and suppliers; builds trust on the rig and onshore.
- Uses data and learning loops to drive measurable performance gains well-to-well.
- Takes end-to-end responsibility for scope, quality of engineering deliverables, and execution outcomes.
Working pattern & travel
- Office-based with offshore trips as required for well start-ups, critical operations, and audits; occasional travel to supplier or partner sites.
