Apply on Department for Energy Security & Net Zero

Description

We are seeking a motivated and creative Media Officer to join the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). As a Media Officer, you will be part of the Communications Directorate, leading the way to showcase our work in delivering clean energy, reducing bills, and tackling climate change.

The media team operates a 24/7 service, managing relationships with journalists, handling enquiries, producing media monitoring, rebutting inaccurate reporting, and providing communications advice on breaking issues. You will develop and deliver comprehensive communications plans, support ministers ahead of media appearances, and work closely with colleagues across government.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Media and press management: managing media interactions, providing timely and accurate information to journalists, and developing proactive press releases.
  • Communications adviser: providing expert communications advice to ministers, special advisers, and senior officials on reactive media issues, crises, reputational risks, and developing stories.
  • Media handling: drafting timely media materials, working with ministerial and policy teams, handling visits, and working up lines to take.
  • News management: spotting potential problems and reacting quickly.
  • Campaigns: playing an active role in departmental campaigns and working alongside strategic communication colleagues.
  • Digital communications: helping government create, shape, share, and exchange information through online and virtual networks.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent understanding of the national news agenda, social media landscape, and communications handling.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to distil complex information into clear key messages.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills.
  • Strong networking skills.
  • Strong team collaboration skills.

We offer a competitive salary of £35,950 - £42,700 per year, a world-class pension, flexible working options, and a career where your learning and development is taken seriously.
