Description
We are seeking a senior-level aerospace engineer to join our Flight Systems Department as part of the Defense Sector at Leidos. As an Aerospace Flight Dynamics Simulation Engineer, you will support development, analysis, and testing of complex flight systems.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Create and maintain 6-DOF, 3-DOF, and hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulations by incorporating aerodynamic & propulsion models, Guidance/Navigation/Control (GNC) algorithms, and other features to accurately characterise performance, flight dynamics, and mission effectiveness of flight vehicles.
- Conduct detailed analysis of flight vehicle dynamics using techniques such as Monte Carlo analysis, trajectory optimisation, and parametric sweeps to support design decisions, trade studies, and mission planning operations.
- Provide accurate assessments of technical results to program managers, external customers, and stakeholders to ensure mission success.
- Lead a small team of junior M&S engineers, determining necessary simulation requirements, delegating tasks, reviewing work for accuracy, and communicating with program leadership.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including aerodynamics, propulsion, mechanical design, avionics, software, and others to ensure system design satisfies mission requirements.
- Support live flight-test events, including planning, on-site test support, telemetry collection, and post-flight analysis.
- Develop, upgrade, or use scripts, GUIs, or other utilities to support analysis and programmatic efforts.
Basic Qualifications:
- Fundamental understanding of aerospace engineering concepts, particularly flight dynamics, simulation, orbital mechanics, and guidance/navigation/controls.
- Solid foundation of programming experience in Matlab/Simulink, C/C++, Python, or other languages.
- Strong technical communication skills and ability to work independently and in collaborative team environments.
- Resident of North Alabama area or willing to relocate to work on-site at the Huntsville, AL office.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field from an ABET-accredited school with 8+ years of experience or a Master’s Degree with 6+ years of experience.
- US citizen with (or ability to obtain) a Secret Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering.
- Familiarity with DOW digital engineering paradigm and experience.
- Prior work with post-flight data analysis.
- Experience with flight system development programs.
- Strong math skills in linear algebra, matrix math, statistics, trigonometry, and coordinate transformation.
- Experience with:
- Conducting Monte Carlo analysis on Linux clusters.
- Hardware-in-the-loop simulation architectures.
- Configuration management software, such as Git or Mercurial.
- C++ programming.
- Trajectory analysis tools, such as TAOS or OTIS.
- Using numerical optimisation techniques.
- Simulink code-generation.
- GNC applications of flight vehicles, guided munitions, and UAS systems.
