Description
We are seeking a Project Assistant for GIS and Data Analytics to support our Information Management Systems department. As a Project Assistant, you will work under limited supervision to conduct research, gather and analyze information, and develop findings or recommendations to support department programs, projects, and operational decisions.
The ideal candidate can identify opportunities for automation and is comfortable working with code. You will support projects that build and maintain internal and public-facing dashboards, maps, and datasets. Responsibilities include performing quality assurance testing on data and creating data visualizations and maps that are accurate and accessible for end users.
An example of project support involves reviewing permits that impact the closure of city streets. You will review a permit's attached PDF or image that depicts the closure, update an ArcGIS map with the closure, and stay on top of new permits each week.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on assigned issues, perform analysis, and assess legislative, fiscal, and political impacts of public policy issues
- Facilitate meetings with city departments, diverse groups from the community, other governmental agencies, and consultants
- Explore and develop creative concepts, ideas, plans, or processes to address project issues
- Develop and monitor program and special project activities
- May represent the department/division at community meetings, workshops, business, and other government meetings
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Business Administration or a closely related field
- Knowledge of effective project management, statistical analysis, and research methods and principles
- Ability to prepare and present project details using complex spreadsheet analysis, graphic presentations, and technical reports
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in GIS, Data/Computer Science, Statistics/Mathematics, or related field
- Technical certifications in programming such as SQL, Python, etc.
- Advanced knowledge of visualization software such as ArcGIS, Tableau, or Power BI, and coding languages such as SQL, Python, or R
Working Conditions:
- Light physical effort. Intermittent sitting, standing, and walking.
- Considerable exposure to stress resulting from complex problem solving, stringent project deadlines, and liaison work between City departments, Mayor's office, politically powerful community groups, and the City Council.
Salary: $24/hr-28/hr, 20 hours per week
