Staff Applied Researcher

Capital One is seeking a Staff Applied Researcher to join their AI Foundations team. The team is responsible for bringing the company's vision for AI to life, working on research and development of AI systems.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or a related field, and experience in applied research. They should be knowledgeable in AI methodologies, have experience building large deep learning models, and be familiar with open-source tools and cloud computing platforms.

Responsibilities:

• Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products
• Leverage a broad stack of technologies to reveal insights in large datasets
• Build AI foundation models through all phases of development
• Engage in high-impact applied research to advance AI developments
• Translate complex work into tangible business goals
• Define and steward novel research directions

Requirements:

• PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields
• 4+ years of experience in Applied Research (with PhD) or 6+ years (with MS)
• Experience with open-source languages and AI foundation models
• Strong understanding of AI methodologies
• Experience building large deep learning models

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering or related fields
• Experience with large language models, training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, explainability, RLHF
• Publications at top conferences (e.g. ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR)
• Experience working with 500+ node clusters of GPUs
