Forward-Deployed Legal Engineer

Epiq New York, NY On-site senior full-time

Salary

$175,000 - $260,000 USD annually

Apply on Epiq

Description

As a Forward-Deployed Legal Engineer at Epiq AI Labs, you'll make their platform work inside real legal teams. You'll lead each client from proof-of-concept (POC) kickoff to go-live: configuring legal workflows the way the client's lawyers work, training the people who use them, and proving value against agreed success criteria.

You'll work closely with associates and review teams, partner with their Legal Solutions Engineer, Customer Success Managers, and Engineering, and turn what you learn in the field into product direction. You'll work from their New York office and serve clients in every region, including EMEA and APAC.

Responsibilities:

  • Run POCs against agreed success criteria and keep each one on scope and on schedule.
  • Build legal workflows and playbooks that reflect how each client's lawyers actually work, ready before the client's first matter.
  • Serve as the legal expert in each engagement, applying the law and procedure that govern the client's work, analyzing its documents, and advising on whether an output is defensible.
  • Take each client from POC to go-live, working with Engineering on integrations.
  • Train associates, review teams, and other day-to-day users during each POC.
  • Spot client issues early and resolve them with Engineering, Product, and Customer Success Managers.
  • Take over the use case, success criteria, stakeholders, data, and timeline at POC kickoff; hand each account to a Customer Success Manager at go-live and stay available for legal workflow questions.
  • Gather and organize client feedback, and turn it into use cases and user stories that shape the product roadmap.

Requirements:

  • A US JD, or a US LLM with a foreign law degree, and active or prior US bar membership.
  • 2–8+ years of legal practice, ideally in litigation.
  • Hands-on experience with real legal workflows and direct client contact.
  • Working knowledge of the tools of legal practice, such as Relativity, DISCO, iManage, Westlaw, and Lexis, and of technology-assisted review (TAR).
  • Fluency with technology: you can write simple scripts, prompt LLMs effectively, and analyze outputs.
  • Daily use of AI in your own work, with examples you can walk through in interviews.
  • The ability to sit with a client's lawyers and rebuild a workflow, not just demo one.
  • Clear communication with both lawyers and engineers, including explaining complex legal concepts in plain terms.
  • Independence as an individual contributor, and the organization to run several POCs at once.
  • Willingness to spend meaningful time at client sites.

Nice to Have:

  • eDiscovery or legal-tech experience.
  • Experience configuring software or building workflows.
  • Consulting or advisory experience.
  • Experience at an early-stage company.
  • Exposure to ML/AI concepts, synthetic data generation, or structured knowledge representation.

What Success Looks Like:

  • POCs you run meet their success criteria and convert to signed clients.
  • Clients go live on schedule with workflows their lawyers use.
  • Use cases and user stories you bring back shape the roadmap.

The Compensation range for this role is $175,000 - $260,000 USD annually and may be eligible for an annual bonus.
