Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Real Time Systems Development Engineer to join our Simulator Development Team, within the Simulation and Vehicle Modelling Group at Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team.

Working closely with our Control Systems Group, you'll play an important role in developing and advancing our real-time simulation capabilities, including our Gearbox Dyno and Driver-in-the-Loop (DIL) Simulator.

This is an opportunity to work across real-time systems, controls and multi-domain modelling, developing and integrating sophisticated simulation solutions that accurately replicate real-world powertrain, driveline and vehicle behaviour. Your work will directly contribute to improving simulation fidelity, system performance and our ability to develop and validate vehicle technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the ongoing development and evolution of the team's Gearbox Dyno and DIL Simulator.
  • Develop, integrate and maintain real-time models covering power unit, driveline, hydraulic and vehicle systems.
  • Develop and improve simulation and control solutions to enhance the accuracy, fidelity and performance of HIL systems.
  • Apply modelling, simulation and correlation techniques to validate system behaviour, investigate discrepancies and resolve technical issues.
  • Develop, integrate and maintain real-time and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation solutions.
  • Develop interfaces and integration between real-time systems, including the Gearbox Dyno and DIL Simulator.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of tools for system configuration, diagnostics, data visualisation, simulation and analysis.
  • Work collaboratively across Simulation, Vehicle Modelling and Control Systems, communicating technical findings and contributing to engineering development activities.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential:

  • Excellent degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Data Science or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrable experience in real-time systems development, HIL simulation, mechatronics or control systems engineering.
  • Strong understanding of modelling and simulation across multiple engineering domains, including mechanical, hydraulic, thermal and electrical systems.
  • Experience applying correlation and validation techniques to identify, investigate and resolve modelling or system discrepancies.
  • Strong problem-solving, mathematical and analytical skills, with the ability to approach complex engineering challenges methodically.
  • Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams, taking ownership of tasks and delivering with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and concisely.
  • A calm, confident and results-driven approach, with the ability to deliver effectively in a demanding, fast-paced environment.

Desirable:

  • Experience within Formula One, high-level motorsport, automotive or powertrain development.
  • Postgraduate qualification (Master's or PhD) in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
  • Experience working with ECUs and real-time operating systems.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as EtherCAT and CAN.
  • Experience with electric motor actuation, servo drives and hydraulic actuation.
  • Programming experience using MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, Python, C# or similar languages.
  • Experience with simulation, control and data acquisition tools such as dSPACE, DYMOLA, AVL-PUMA, SystemMonitor/TAG SECU and ATLAS.
  • Familiarity with development and collaboration tools such as Jira, Git and Bitbucket.
  • Understanding of numerical methods, optimisation, control theory, vehicle dynamics and vehicle performance simulation.
