Associate Librarian (Part Time)

The Associate Librarian (Part Time) role at the Salt Lake City Public Library involves providing high-quality customer service, performing reference and circulation tasks, and supporting programming and outreach activities.

Primary Responsibilities

• Provide excellent customer service to library patrons, including responding to inquiries, offering in-depth reference and instruction, and readers advisory
• Interpret library rules, policies, and procedures for the public
• Interact with patrons in person, by telephone, and electronically
• Assist patrons with the use of computers and technology
• Foster good working relationships with diverse people, including staff, patrons, volunteers, and vendors
• Accept assignments from supervisors, managers, or other library staff in a professional and timely manner
• Participate in programming and outreach activities under the supervision of a designated program or service coordinator
• Take on a leadership role in committees or workgroups on activities that align with strategic goals
• Provide support with collection maintenance as assigned
• Create and maintain high-quality library displays
• Perform circulation tasks, such as checking in and out library materials and processing patron hold requests
• Assist patrons with account activity and fines
• Handle cash transactions and use automated material handlers for sorting library materials
• Perform material placement processes, including sorting and shelving library materials
• Retrieve materials from library book drops

Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of a Bachelor's Degree and one year of related job experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Enthusiasm for working with the public and solid foundation in good customer service skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills
• Intermediate knowledge of operating a computer and programs
• Ability to work days, nights, or weekends as scheduled
• If travel is required for library purposes, must have transportation and maintain state-required insurance

Preferred Qualifications

• General knowledge or experience with collection maintenance
• Spanish language and/or other non-English language skills

Working Environment

• Work is performed in an urban library environment
• Subject to repetitive movement, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects
• Must be able to lift/carry library materials up to 50 lbs and push/pull library carts
• Must have good hand mobility and coordination
• Subject to intermittent periods of inclement weather when retrieving library materials or participating in library outreach programs

Schedule

• Part-time, 18 or 19 hours per week, including evenings and weekends
