Description

Job Description

Helsing is a defence AI company that aims to protect democracies through technological leadership. We are looking for a Multimodal Sensing and Fusion Engineer to join our team in Berlin, London, or Munich.

The Role

As a Multimodal Sensing and Fusion Engineer, you will own the sensing stack end-to-end, architecting a multimodal perception front-end that combines various sensors into a single input to Helsing's AI. You will translate mission requirements into specifications for sensor selection, placement, synchronisation, and calibration, and define safety concepts for the system.

Responsibilities

  • Define the multimodal sensing architecture, selecting and integrating sensors to optimise algorithm performance and balance trade-offs.
  • Own sensor synchronisation, designing and implementing time synchronisation across heterogeneous sensors.
  • Own sensor calibration, developing intrinsic, extrinsic, spatial, and temporal calibration procedures.
  • Define safety concepts, deriving failure modes, fault detection, isolation, and recovery concepts.
  • Drive system design and architecture, analysing the interplay of hardware, software, and algorithms.
  • Bring hardware to life, spending hands-on time in the lab testing and integrating prototypes.
  • Tune data quality, analysing application-specific sensing performance and adjusting designs.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, Robotics, or a related field.
  • A professional track record building multimodal sensing or sensor-fusion systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of system-level synchronisation and sensor calibration.
  • Ability to derive safety concepts for a sensing or perception subsystem.
  • Strong systems design instincts and proficiency in C/C++ or Rust and Python.

Nice to Have

  • Depth in one or more sensor modalities, such as thermal imaging or FMCW radar signal processing.
  • IMU and inertial navigation expertise.
  • Sensor-fusion estimation experience.
  • Low-level hardware experience.
  • Background in automotive, robotics, or aerospace sensor fusion.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and VSOP options.
  • Relocation support: up to €2,500 and 4 weeks temporary accommodation.
  • Learning: €500/£450 yearly allowance.
  • Health & wellness: gym membership and mental health support.
  • Social: regular company events and monthly social allowances.
  • Enhanced parental leave and family support.
