HPC AI Systems Administrator Intern

Salary

Hourly Salary USD 35.00 - 41.00

Apply on Hewlett Packard Enterprise

Description

Hewlett Packard Enterprise is looking for a systems administration intern to join the HPC and AI Data Center Administration team. The intern will work alongside administrators on the security, monitoring, and visibility side of the team's work.

The intern will help identify where lab systems lack expected monitoring, logging, and vulnerability scanning coverage, build repeatable reports, document hardening expectations, and improve the team's ability to track remediation work. Over the term, the intern produces a system visibility baseline and a set of tools and documentation the team continues to use after the internship ends.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with inventory validation for HPC and AI lab systems.
  • Review monitoring, logging, and vulnerability scanning coverage across a heterogeneous system fleet.
  • Identify gaps in agent deployment, log forwarding, scan inclusion, and system ownership records.
  • Build scripts, reports, or dashboards that summarize security visibility.
  • Document hardening expectations and practical checklists for lab systems.
  • Work with system administrators to validate findings and prioritize follow-up work.
  • Present project results and recommendations at the end of the internship.

Requirements:

  • Linux is the working environment for this role, not a nice-to-have. Comfort operating without a graphical interface.
  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in cybersecurity, computer science, software engineering, information systems, computer engineering, network administration, or a related technical field.
  • Working comfort on the Linux command line.
  • Demonstrated hands-on Linux exposure through at least one of the following: a Linux or Unix systems administration course, a personal or home lab Linux environment, a prior internship or job with Linux responsibilities, or substantive coursework in a Linux-based environment.
  • Interest in cybersecurity, infrastructure, monitoring, or automation.
  • Ability to organize technical findings clearly in writing.
  • Willingness to learn from experienced administrators and ask questions early.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Scripting ability in Python or Bash sufficient to automate a repetitive data-gathering task.
  • Experience with SSH key management, sudo and privilege boundaries, system services, or package management.
  • Familiarity with logging, monitoring, vulnerability scanning, or SIEM concepts.
  • Exposure to Git or GitHub in a collaborative workflow.
  • Working understanding of TCP/IP networking, firewalls, DNS, and Linux permissions.
  • Hands-on security or monitoring tooling exposure.

What you will learn as an HPE Intern:

  • How HPC and AI lab systems are operated in a real engineering environment.
  • Practical monitoring, logging, and vulnerability management workflows.
  • How to turn messy operational data into useful dashboards and action plans.

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive suite of benefits that supports physical, financial, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Investment in your career with programs to help you reach your career goals.
  • Unconditional inclusion and celebration of individual uniqueness.
