Description
Join the Production Engineering team at Canva, where you're tasked with redefining how production reliability works at scale. You'll write software that changes how production behaves, working closely with product teams to minimise technical risk.
Responsibilities:
- Own an engagement area, focusing on high-risk technical domains such as sharding core data stores and resource utilisation
- Write production software, optimising for reliability outcomes at scale
- Collaborate with fellow production engineers, including pairing, mentoring, and learning opportunities
- Prioritise customer experience, striving for fewer incidents, faster recovery, and lower severity
- Contribute to platform work, seeding capabilities that scale beyond your engagement
- Develop compounding effects at the system layer, enabling other engineers to build on top of improved systems
Requirements:
- Experience with production at scale, specifically owning reliability work within large-scale distributed systems
- Background in embedded delivery, having worked closely with product or feature teams
- Proficiency in JVM or systems depth, with hands-on experience in languages like Java, Go, Rust, or C++
- Practical experience with distributed systems, including sharding, replication, and failure modes
- Debugging skills for large codebases, able to quickly orient and fix issues
- Influence without authority, demonstrated ability to improve systems through wisdom and trust
Technical Knowledge:
- Networking depth, understanding the network stack and traffic patterns at scale
- Linux internals, with kernel-level understanding for reasoning about system behaviour
- Familiarity with distributed systems patterns, including consistent hashing and circuit breakers
- Observability tooling experience, with instrumentation, tracing, and alerting expertise
- Containerisation and orchestration skills, specifically with Kubernetes at production scale
- Performance analysis capabilities, with experience profiling and fixing JVM applications or systems-level processes
- Cloud infrastructure knowledge, particularly with AWS at meaningful depth
- Incident response experience, having worked on-call in serious production environments
Nice to Have:
- Enterprise SaaS background, specifically in production engineering
- JVM internals expertise, including tuning GC and profiling threads
- Experience with multi-region or sharding, particularly in data store migrations
- eBPF or kernel instrumentation experience
Benefits:
- Equity packages
- Inclusive parental leave policy
- Annual Vibe & Thrive allowance
- Flexible leave options
