Description
As a Senior Electrical Engineer at WSP, you will have the opportunity to work on landmark projects around the world and make a significant impact in the communities you care about.
The main activities and responsibilities of this role include:
- Complying with all role-specific SHEQ, quality, governance, ethics, and risk-management obligations, and actively applying Safety in Design principles throughout the project lifecycle.
- Collaborating with Manila and Australian Power & Energy teams, clients, utilities and network service providers, OEMs, contractors, and other engineering disciplines.
- Developing electrical network concepts and design solutions for EHV, HV, and MV systems supplying infrastructure, transport facilities, industrial sites, water assets, data centres, and other critical facilities.
- Defining the electrical supply philosophy, connection arrangement, network topology, voltage levels, redundancy, resilience, maintainability, and staged development requirements for new and upgraded facilities.
- Preparing and reviewing single-line diagrams, key line diagrams, substation layouts, equipment arrangements, cable route drawings, schematics, design reports, specifications, datasheets, schedules, and technical calculations.
- Undertaking or coordinating load assessments, demand forecasts, equipment sizing, voltage-drop and cable-rating calculations, short-circuit assessments, insulation coordination, reactive power considerations, and network performance checks to support Design Decisions.
- Designing and specifying EHV/HV/MV substations, including AIS and GIS solutions, power transformers, reactors, switchgear, instrument transformers, surge arresters, busbars, neutral earthing equipment, and associated primary plant.
- Designing and specifying underground cable systems, including conductor sizing, ampacity and derating, bonding and earthing, sheath voltage and losses, cable routing, trench and duct-bank requirements, joints, terminations, pulling considerations, and interfaces with civil works.
- Developing earthing and lightning protection design inputs, including fault-current allocation, touch and step voltage requirements, equipment bonding, lightning risk considerations, and coordination with specialist studies.
- Coordinating interfaces with protection, control, SCADA, telecommunications, metering, secondary systems, building services, civil, structural, mechanical, fire, security, and architectural teams.
- Contributing to proposals, scopes of work, fee estimates, programmes, and resource planning, and supporting client engagement and technical presentations.
- Mentoring junior engineers and designers, promoting consistent engineering practices, and sharing lessons learned across the team.
The qualifications for this role include:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline from a recognised institution; postgraduate study in electrical engineering is desirable.
- Typically 7+ years of relevant experience in the design and delivery of HV/MV electrical networks, substations, or major infrastructure power systems.
- Strong practical knowledge of EHV, HV, and MV network design, substation primary systems, and the interfaces between primary plant, secondary systems, and facility distribution.
- Demonstrated experience developing power-supply solutions from utility connection through substations and distribution networks to infrastructure or facility loads.
- Experience designing AIS and/or GIS substations and specifying transformers, switchgear, instrument transformers, surge arresters, busbars, neutral earthing equipment, and associated primary plant.
- Experience with underground HV/MV cable systems, including cable sizing and derating, bonding and earthing, route and installation requirements, joints and terminations, and civil interfaces.
- Ability to prepare and review single-line diagrams, layouts, specifications, datasheets, equipment schedules, cable schedules, design reports, and calculation packages.
- Sound understanding of load flow, voltage drop, fault levels, equipment ratings, protection coordination, insulation coordination, earthing, and lightning protection as they affect physical design and equipment selection.
- Experience with critical infrastructure or data-centre power systems, including high-availability configurations, redundant supplies, staged expansion, maintainable isolation, and continuity-of-service considerations, is highly regarded.
- Working knowledge of relevant Australian, IEC, and project-specific standards and utility requirements.
- Experience coordinating with utilities, clients, OEMs, contractors, and multidisciplinary design teams across concept, detailed design, procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning phases.
- Strong technical writing and spoken English, with the ability to communicate complex electrical concepts clearly across countries, cultures, and time zones.
