Description
Join the Production Engineering team at Canva, where you'll work on redefining how the world experiences design.
The Production Engineering team sits at the intersection of software engineering and reliability problems in Canva's infrastructure. You'll write software that changes how production behaves at scale, working on high-risk technical domains such as sharding core data stores, resource utilisation, and distributed systems challenges.
Responsibilities:
- Own an engagement area: Take long-term accountability for one of Canva's highest-risk technical domains.
- Write production software: Instrument, refactor, and rebuild pieces that cause problems at scale.
- Collaborate: Pair, mentor, and learn from fellow production engineers.
- Customer First: Strive for fewer incidents, faster recovery, and lower severity.
- Platform contributions: Bring back patterns that need shared capabilities.
- Compounding at the system layer: Understand a system to change how other engineers build on top of it.
Requirements:
- Experience in production at scale: Owned reliability work within large-scale distributed systems.
- Embedded delivery: Worked as an engineer embedded in or partnering closely with a product or feature team.
- JVM or systems depth: Built real things in Java, Go, Rust, C++, or comparable systems languages.
- Distributed systems in practice: Navigated sharding, replication, failure modes, consistency tradeoffs.
- Debugging large codebases: Parachute into an unfamiliar codebase, orient quickly, find and fix problems.
- Influence without authority: Proven to have made things better in systems through wisdom and trust.
Technical knowledge:
- Networking Depth: Know the network stack and traffic at scale.
- Linux internals: Reason about what's happening when a system misbehaves.
- Distributed systems patterns: Consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, circuit breakers.
- Observability tooling: Instrumented systems for real, built tracing, dashboards, alerting.
- Containerisation and orchestration: Kubernetes at production scale.
- Performance analysis: Profiled JVM applications or systems-level processes.
- Cloud infrastructure: AWS at meaningful depth.
- Incident response in practice: Been on-call in a serious production environment.
Nice to have:
- Enterprise SaaS background: Done similar work at an org that's done it well.
- JVM internals: Tuned GC and profiled threads in production.
- Multi-region or sharding experience: Involved in data store migration or multi-region architecture.
- eBPF or kernel instrumentation: Production experience.
Benefits:
- Equity packages
- Inclusive parental leave policy
- Annual Vibe & Thrive allowance
- Flexible leave options
