Description
Howden is seeking an Android and iOS app developer to join their team. The successful candidate will work on building and maintaining apps that turn an ordinary phone into a motion sensor for insurance telematics.
The app detects when a driver gets into their car, records the journey in the background, and uploads it for scoring. The developer will be responsible for both Android and iOS platforms, with a focus on Android.
Key responsibilities include:
- Background journey recording using foreground services, Activity Recognition, and geofencing
- BLE beacon detection of a device in the customer's vehicle
- Sensor capture and trip assembly using GPS, accelerometer, and gyroscope streams
- Permission integrity and customer-facing app development
- Release engineering for white-label builds and staged rollouts
The ideal candidate will have:
- Strong commercial Android experience in Kotlin, with Coroutines and Flow
- Experience with background execution and its failure modes
- Comfort with the Android runtime permission model
- Modern Android UI and architecture skills
- Instinct to write tests for concurrency and race conditions
- Practical fluency with AI coding agents
- Willingness to debug from evidence and add targeted logging
Desirable skills include:
- Existing iOS experience in Swift and SwiftUI/UIKit
- Prior work in telematics, IoT, fitness/activity tracking, or navigation
- BLE and Bluetooth stack experience
- Location and sensor fusion skills
- Firebase experience
In return, Howden offers a career that you define, with a focus on diversity and individual values.
