Senior Software Engineer - Streams - Observability

The Observability Streams team at Elastic builds a unified data pipeline that connects data sources to destinations, controlling processing and routing. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Streams Backend team, you will design and develop new features for Logstash and the Streams Backend service, contribute to the OpenTelemetry Collector, and support users and enterprise customers.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement new features for Logstash and its plugins in Java and JRuby.
• Develop core backend services for the Streams program in Golang.
• Contribute to the OpenTelemetry Collector in Golang.
• Solve distributed systems problems at scale.
• Maintain, update, and improve existing code and dependencies while ensuring automated test coverage.
• Engage with public GitHub repositories and community forums.
• Provide Pull Request reviews and guidance to peers.
• Collaborate with other teams to drive product goals.
• Participate in on-call rotations to support customers.

Requirements

• Ability to work in a remote-first, highly distributed environment with excellent communication skills.
• Proficient analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills.
• Expertise in at least one of Java, Golang, and Ruby, with a willingness to learn and work with others.
• Clear written communication and ability to work proficiently in a remote-first team.
• Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimise code.

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with observability tools and concepts, especially OpenTelemetry.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• JRuby development.
• Open-source software development.
• Knowledge of stream processing platforms, database technologies, and network technologies.
• Exposure to the Elastic stack.
