Backend Software Development Engineer - Mid/Senior/Lead/Principal

The software engineer role at Salesforce encompasses architecture, design, implementation, and testing to ensure we build products right and release them with high quality. Equally important is advanced prompt engineering , the ability to write precise, structured prompts and cultivate the system context that makes AI outputs reliable, secure, and production-ready.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
- Develop backend applications for various Salesforce clouds, including Marketing, Commerce, Sales, Big Data, Service, Einstein, MuleSoft, Platform, Industries, Slack, and Heroku.
- Design, implement, and optimize robust APIs and API frameworks that perform and scale in a multi-tenant environment.
- Handle large data sets in the cloud, working with platforms such as GCP, AWS, Alibaba, and Azure.
- Integrate with internal and external systems.
- Practice test-driven development and utilize CI/CD tools.
- Build and ship high-quality, production-grade software using modern engineering practices, incorporating AI into your development workflow.
- Design and orchestrate complex systems where AI agents integrate seamlessly into human workflows.
- Contribute to building and maintaining the shared system context, enabling AI to operate accurately and reliably.
- Critically evaluate code for correctness, quality, security, and performance.
- For Big Data roles, work with technologies like Phoenix, HBase, MapReduce, Yarn, Kafka, Spark, Hive, Presto, or equivalent large-scale distributed systems.
You're Our Person If...
- You have a related technical degree.
- You have 3+ years of backend software development experience.
- You possess deep knowledge of object-oriented programming languages such as Java, C++, Go, C#, Ruby, Scala, Python, Node.js, or JavaScript.
- You have broad knowledge of web standards relating to APIs, including REST, SOAP, XML, WSDL, HTTP, JSON, etc.
- You have experience with Spring, gRPC, REST, and the HTTP protocol.
- You are familiar with Agile development methodology.
- You have a demonstrated, genuine AI-first approach to engineering.
- You have experience using AI tools in development workflows.
- You possess advanced prompt engineering skills.
- You are willing to participate in the team's on-call rotation.
- You can work in-person three days per week or 10 days per quarter for some engineering teams.
