Description
Grafana Labs is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to work on Tempo, the open-source distributed tracing backend behind Grafana Cloud Traces and Grafana Enterprise Traces (GET).
The successful candidate will help shape the future of Tempo, focusing on making Grafana Cloud Traces 'just work' for customers, achieving operational excellence at scale, evolving Tempo into a platform enabler, pushing performance further, and preparing Tempo for an agent-driven world.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering significant technical projects and owning major components of Tempo
- Building APIs for humans and agents
- Contributing to operational excellence and collaborating with Product and sibling teams
- Mentoring and supporting engineers
- Participating in on-call for the services built and contributing to incident response and post-incident learning
- Contributing to open source
Requirements:
- Technical ownership and a track record of delivering complex projects
- Solid systems experience with distributed data systems
- Strong software craftsmanship and experience with Go
- Operational mindset with experience owning production services
- Customer focus and pragmatism
- Collaboration and clear writing skills
Nice to have:
- Experience with tracing, OpenTelemetry, or large-scale observability systems
- Experience designing query languages or APIs
- Experience with columnar storage formats or purpose-built on-disk formats
- Experience operating multi-tenant, multi-cell SaaS infrastructure at scale
- Experience building for AI/LLM consumers
- Open-source contribution or maintainership
- Experience as an on-call user of Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, or Tempo
- Experience in a fully remote, globally distributed team
In terms of compensation, the On-Target Earnings (OTE)/Base compensation range for this role is CAD $164,490 - $197,389.
