Description
Samsara is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Maps team, which is building a shared geospatial platform used by product teams to develop location-aware experiences. The successful candidate will help set the technical direction for this platform, working across the geospatial stack to build data ingestion and processing pipelines, model and serve map data, improve map matching and routing foundations, and create APIs.
Responsibilities:
- Shape the technical direction of the Maps team
- Build geospatial systems and integrations that support foundational features across most Samsara products
- Scale offerings to support storage, query, and computational load of real-time features
- Consolidate existing team-specific geospatial solutions into scalable platform-wide offerings
- Build agentic solutions for customers to self-serve data
- Raise the technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship
- Partner with engineering leadership on strategic decisions
- Represent Samsara externally in the mapping/geospatial ecosystem
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
- 8+ years building software, with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership role
- Strong programming and design fundamentals
- 4+ years working on large-scale distributed systems
- 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams
Nice to Have:
- Experience with GIS technologies and spatial analysis
- Familiarity with geospatial data formats and open mapping ecosystems
- Comfort working in ambiguity and aligning teams without formal authority
