Description
We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to define and drive the strategic direction for backend and full-stack engineering practices, architecture, and technical excellence across the organization.
You will lead the development of scalable, reliable, and secure distributed systems that serve government customers, and serve as the technical authority and thought leader for system architecture, data design, and engineering excellence.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and implementing modern service architectures, data pipelines, and infrastructure patterns
- Delivering new features and improvements to core services
- Collaborating with product managers and stakeholders to balance technical feasibility with business requirements
- Building and maintaining shared libraries, service frameworks, and infrastructure patterns
- Identifying opportunities to modernize backend systems and taking ownership of large-scale technical initiatives
- Establishing and championing engineering best practices
- Mentoring and coaching engineers at all levels
- Influencing technical decisions across teams and serving as a strategic advisor on architecture and infrastructure initiatives
Requirements:
- 5+ years of related experience
- Demonstrated track record of leading and delivering multiple production-ready, scalable distributed systems
- Proven experience architecting and implementing microservice architectures at scale
- Experience with distributed system patterns, API design, data modeling, and observability strategies
- Strong proficiency in modern programming languages (Java, Python, or similar)
- Experience with cloud-native architectures, infrastructure as code, and deployment patterns (AWS, Azure, GCP)
