Job Overview

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Service Tools team at Airbnb, you will play a crucial role in enabling backend developers to develop, test, and maintain their code quickly and reliably.

The Service Tools team's mission is to empower Airbnb's largest cohort of developers, and you will be responsible for their productivity. As a Staff Engineer, you will set technical direction, own a platform-spanning area of the developer lifecycle end-to-end, and drive a roadmap with partner teams across the company.

Key Responsibilities

• Own a multi-quarter, platform-spanning workstream, such as agentic developer workflows, intelligent build infrastructure, test excellence, codebase modernization, or developer observability
• Advance the AI-assisted development platform, including agent skills, tool integrations, and telemetry
• Scale build and merge infrastructure for a large JVM monorepo
• Improve testing, including coverage, mutation signal, AI-authored tests, and testing contracts
• Lead large-scale codebase modernization through automated refactoring
• Turn developer and production telemetry into actionable decisions
• Set standards by example through code and architecture reviews, design docs, and incident reviews
• Mentor and grow engineers on the team
• Partner with engineering leaders across Airbnb to drive adoption of new capabilities

Requirements

• 9+ years of industry experience with a Bachelor's/Master's degree, or 6+ years with a PhD
• Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
• Proficiency in one or more back-end server languages
• Experience with architectural patterns of high-scale distributed products/services
• Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and drive alignment across teams and functions

Nice to Have

• Experience with build systems and large monorepos
• JVM experience (Java and/or Kotlin)
• Fluency with the modern AI-assisted development stack
• Measurement instinct and ability to quantify problems and prove fixes
