Job Overview

As a Staff Software Engineer, Finance Engineering at Anthropic, you will build a platform for finance events, focusing on accuracy and audit-grade controls. This involves designing and implementing a front door for finance events, an append-only ledger, and an accounting engine.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and build the front door into finance and its governed contracts, including APIs, event bus, adapters, data-quality gates, and processing.
• Develop the accounting ledger and engine with an append-only ledger, idempotent posting, rules framework, and period locks.
• Create SDKs and frameworks for finance apps and agents.
• Implement controls into the platform as code, such as immutable audit trail, maker-checker, scoped access, and segregation of duties.
• Build and run production services for tax and collections, ensuring reliability, uptime, latency, and correctness targets.
• Shape the platform's technical direction, including architecture, engineering standards, and design reviews.

Requirements

• Strong backend engineering in a statically typed language (Go, Java, Rust) or Python at scale.
• Experience with high-volume, event-driven systems, idempotent processing, replay, and backfill.
• Relational data model design and SQL for complex, versioned data.
• API, SDK, and service-to-service integration design.
• Experience with auditability, access control, or compliance requirements.
• Strong written and verbal communication.

Preferred Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience.
• Experience building developer platforms or paved paths.
• Familiarity with streaming systems like Pub/Sub or Kafka.
• Experience with LLMs and agents, including MCP.
• Background in building ledgers, sub-ledgers, billing, or payments systems.
• Knowledge of accounting concepts and internal controls.

Logistics

• Annual salary: $320,000 - $405,000 USD.
• Location: San Francisco, CA | Seattle, WA.
