Head of Engineering, AI Platform

Job Overview

We're seeking a Head of Engineering for our AI Platform team at Gusto, a company that handles payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR for small businesses.

About the Role

The AI Platform team builds agents that help small business owners and the platform they run on. The team consists of around 25 engineers and managers. The platform is already in production, and the focus is now on scaling it.

Responsibilities

• Lead the group's technical strategy for building agents that assist and automate work for small business owners
• Set the technical direction and roadmap for the group
• Lead and empower managers and tech leads in the group
• Set engineering standards for agent behavior and reliability
• Work closely with product and data science partners
• Represent AI engineering to senior leadership
• Champion AI-native ways of working

Requirements

• 12+ years of engineering experience, including 5+ years leading through other managers and tech leads
• Track record of shipping AI or agent products
• Ability to set technical strategy across several teams
• Technical depth to engage senior engineers on architecture decisions
• Experience growing an engineering organization
• Comfort leading a cross-functional group

$321,000 to $356,000 per year
