Description

We are seeking a Cloud Efficiency Engineer (AWS/FinOps) to join our Engineering team. As a Cloud Efficiency Engineer, you will own Buildkite's cloud efficiency picture end-to-end, tracing COGS signals down to technical drivers, building models, shipping changes, and proving savings.

Responsibilities:

  • Follow the money: trace cost signals to technical causes, down to customer-level job costs and state machine changes
  • Build and maintain cost models for common and expensive operations
  • Rank opportunities into a defensible portfolio: expected saving, risk, effort, and involvement
  • Ship fixes: implement safe, measurable optimisations, and partner with engineering teams
  • Prove it landed: establish baselines, verify realised savings, and build guardrails and tooling
  • Translate between engineering and Finance

Requirements:

  • Delivered meaningful, measured AWS savings in a scaled production environment
  • Working engineer with hands-on experience in reading, writing, and shipping code
  • Strong systems diagnosis skills
  • Sound trade-off judgement
  • Ability to influence teams without direct management
  • Stand behind numbers with robust methodology

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Datadog or observability cost optimisation
  • FinOps engineering experience or close collaboration with finance on unit economics and cost attribution
  • Built granular cost attribution or automated cost guardrails
  • Worked with GraphQL at scale, developer tooling, CI/CD, or cloud infrastructure products
  • Scaled SaaS, platform, or observability organisation with a significant AWS footprint
  • Finance or commercial background alongside engineering

Benefits:

  • Work from anywhere in the world for up to 6 weeks a year
  • 20 days paid annual leave, 10 days sick & carer's leave
  • 16 weeks paid parental leave for primary carers
  • Remote-work allowance for home-office kit, co-working, or working elsewhere
  • Confidential EAP & mental health support
  • Support for learning and growth with time and budget for conferences, courses, and coaching
  • Retirement and health coverage
