GitLab is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer for its Nonlinear Productivity team. As a technical anchor, you will set the technical direction for the team's agentic systems and drive solutions from discovery through completion.

Responsibilities:

  • Set technical direction for agentic systems
  • Discover and prioritize sources of friction across GitLab's SDLC
  • Work across any part of GitLab's codebase
  • Apply distributed systems judgment
  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers
  • Collaborate with the India-based group
  • Serve as a bar raiser for hiring
  • Own a greenfield technical foundation

Requirements:

  • Experience building reliable agentic or large language model-based systems
  • Ability to work autonomously in unfamiliar codebases
  • Strong distributed systems and computer science fundamentals
  • Proficiency in Go, Rust, or Python
  • Track record of delivering results from unclear requirements
  • Experience designing evaluation frameworks
  • History of unblocking and enabling teammates
