Staff Software Engineer, Passport & Commerce (Backend)

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Passport & Commerce team at Airbnb. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing and building the next generation of our account platform, influencing how millions of guests and hosts experience Airbnb.

The Passport & Commerce team builds the trusted account and commerce foundation that enables anyone to become part of the Airbnb community. This involves creating a reliable and extensible platform that supports new programs and partner integrations.

Key responsibilities include:

• Designing and evolving core services and data models to track account state, eligibility, and entitlements
• Partnering with product and design to translate new product concepts into scalable technical designs
• Collaborating with Payments and Wallet engineering to ensure accurate settlement of credits and discounts
• Setting technical direction and leading design reviews across a growing team
• Driving cross-team architecture decisions to maintain consistency with Airbnb's broader Passport model
• Identifying and resolving reliability, scalability, and data-integrity risks

Requirements:

• 9+ years of experience designing and scaling complex backend systems
• Proven track record of technical leadership in high-growth environments
• Deep expertise in distributed systems fundamentals, including data consistency and API design
• Experience building or operating systems involving financial transactions or entitlements is strongly preferred
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

This is a remote-eligible position, and the base pay range is $212,000-$265,000 USD per year.
