Engineering Manager, DevOps

GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager, DevOps to build, manage, and support a globally distributed engineering team delivering high-quality, reliable platform capabilities and user experiences.

In this role, you'll hire and onboard talent, guide technical delivery, shape team workflows, and align engineering execution with product management, design, and business goals.

Responsibilities:

• Build, manage, and mentor a globally distributed engineering team, creating an environment where team members can thrive and advance their careers.
• Hire, onboard, and develop engineers while maintaining high standards for quality, accountability, and psychological safety.
• Partner with product management, product design, and cross-functional engineering teams to align technical direction, shape roadmaps, and deliver against commitments.
• Guide engineers on system architecture, code quality, performance, security, and maintainability across frontend and backend disciplines.
• Manage and refine agile, remote, and asynchronous workflows, maintaining delivery cadence and addressing blockers, backlogs, or delayed execution early.
• Encourage and integrate AI capabilities and modern developer tooling into daily workflows to improve productivity, innovation, and efficiency.
• Conduct regular one-on-ones, provide continuous, actionable feedback, and support career progression through coaching and skill development.
• Maintain visibility into operational health and reliability, participating in system availability and incident management rotations as needed.

Requirements:

• Experience managing engineering teams, providing architectural guidance and technical mentorship, and building team accountability.
• A background in enterprise software development, distributed systems, and software delivery pipelines.
• Experience bringing together stakeholders across product, design, engineering, and infrastructure to make sound, timely technical decisions.
• A track record of establishing effective engineering processes, managing delivery execution, and moving work forward in ambiguous or fast-changing situations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience communicating clearly in writing and verbally while collaborating in remote-first, asynchronous, and globally distributed environments.
• A commitment to building inclusive, psychologically safe team cultures where engineers can contribute and raise standards.
• Experience using AI-assisted tools and modern software workflows to improve team velocity and efficiency.
