Substation Physical Design – Designer/Engineer

We are seeking a Substation Physical Design – Designer/Engineer to join our team in Birmingham, AL. This role is responsible for designing transmission and distribution substations, producing engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for substation projects with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs.

Responsibilities:

• Prepare high-quality design packages for substation projects using CAD-based tools
• Design physical aspects of substations, including foundation layouts, grounding layouts, conduit layouts, control house layouts, section drawings, electrical bus design, etc.
• Specify, order, and provide approval drawings for non-stock materials
• Coordinate and communicate with other design disciplines associated with substation physical design projects
• Provide quality assurance reviews and technical training to internal designers/engineers
• Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve equipment and material issues
• Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction, and post-construction
• Participate in substation design review meetings
• Support Southern Company's design criteria and standardization efforts

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering (Engineer)
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology (Designer)
• Associate degree with 3+ years relevant industry experience (Designer)
• No degree with 5+ years relevant industry experience (Designer)
• Strong understanding of substation equipment and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards
• AutoCAD training, experience, or certification required
• Experience using 3D modeling software and document management systems preferred
