Staff+ Software Engineer, Distributed Systems

Job Overview

We're seeking a Staff+ Software Engineer to join our Distributed Systems team at Anthropic. You'll play a key role in developing and maintaining our AI systems, focusing on safety and reliability.

Responsibilities:

• Develop monitoring systems to detect unwanted behaviors from API partners and take automated enforcement actions.
• Deploy and manage these systems across multiple clouds, ensuring consistency and observability.
• Design and harden the sandboxed runtime for AI agents, implementing isolation, network egress controls, and audit logging.
• Manage cost and capacity for large volumes of long-running agent work, setting and meeting service-level objectives.
• Collaborate with engineers, researchers, and security teams to integrate new detection capabilities.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or comparable experience.
• Proficiency in Python, Distributed Systems, and Infrastructure as Code.
• Experience across multiple cloud providers or with provider-agnostic infrastructure.
• Background in building and operating large-scale, distributed infrastructure.
• Familiarity with sandboxing and isolation technologies or systems languages like Rust.
• Strong communication skills for explaining complex technical concepts.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 8+ years of software engineering experience.
• Experience handling sensitive or regulated data with strict access controls.
• Background in running LLM-based agents in production.
• Experience with integrity, spam, fraud, or abuse detection and mitigation.

Logistics

• Annual salary: $320,000 - $485,000 USD.
• Location: New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA.
• Hybrid policy: 25% office time.
