Staff+ Software Engineer, Storage + Transfer

Job Overview

Anthropic is seeking a Staff+ Software Engineer to lead the development of its storage infrastructure. You will design, secure, operate, scale, govern, and optimize blob storage platforms at hyper-scale. Your expertise will guide high-stakes architectural decisions, ensuring stored data is securely and speedily accessible across varying infrastructures and regions.

Key Responsibilities

• Shape the technical strategy and architecture for Anthropic's storage layers
• Build strong relationships with users and partner teams to understand access patterns and unique requirements
• Partner with CSPs, networking, and datacenter teams on infrastructure primitives
• Translate user needs into scalable system designs and drive alignment
• Make principled tradeoffs across durability, availability, consistency, performance, security, and cost
• Break large problems into deliverable milestones and lead cross-functional teams
• Work across backend stacks, abstraction layers, and clients to provide simple interfaces
• Plan and lead large migrations of critical workloads with minimal disruption
• Participate in and improve operations, including SLOs, observability, capacity planning, and incident response
• Stay hands-on in code and production, especially in critical and complex areas

Requirements

• Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed storage systems
• Deep understanding of storage system fundamentals, including replication, erasure coding, consistency models, and security approaches
• Experience serving as an owner, tech lead, or architect for large, complex infrastructure systems
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and hands-on coding ability in at least one systems language
• Experience operating and steering critical infrastructure at scale, including security, on-call, incident response, and cost efficiency
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
