Mechanical Technician

Description

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Technician to join our on-site engineering team at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out, leading, and supervising the safe installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of the Trust's plant, equipment, and buildings.

The post holder will be required to work under pressure in emergency situations where the failure to act promptly or safely may result in serious injury, damage, or loss of life. Previous NHS experience is not essential, although it would be useful, and full supplementary training will be provided.

The role includes being a member of the on-call team supporting the Trust out of hours.

Main duties of the job

  • Carrying out and supervising the safe installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of the Trust's mechanical building services, such as heating, hot and cold water, ventilation, and air conditioning, passenger lifts, and lifting equipment, internal and external drainage, etc.
  • Ideally, you will have an understanding and experience of steam-operated plant and equipment.
  • You will require a well-developed understanding of a range of work procedures and practices, the majority of which are non-routine, and which require intermediate-level theoretical knowledge acquired through formal training to NVQ 4, or equivalent, with at least 5 years of relevant working experience.
  • As well as the full range of duties associated with the post holder's core skills, i.e., installation, reactive and preventative maintenance, diagnose faults, carry out repairs, modifications, calibration, etc., the role often requires specialisation and a multi-skilled approach with team members having responsibilities in nominated specialist Estates roles, such as Authorised Person for Water, Ventilation, Work at Height, Confined Space, Pressure Systems, or Medical Gases.
  • This role may also be required for supporting specific projects or tasks, and the coaching, training, or development of others.

Benefits

We are committed to investing in your personal and professional development, and we offer and encourage opportunities for our team to earn recognised qualifications through supported study and training.
