Join Deliveroo's London team as a Senior Software Engineer, Backend - New Verticals. You will help improve code structure and architecture while leading team project planning to maximise efficiency and reliability across production systems.

What You'll Be Doing
- Drive Technical Excellence: Improve code structure and architecture, develop, release, and run large-scale web applications while transitioning from a monolithic codebase to a microservice-based architecture.
- Lead Project Planning: Partner with Product and Design to ensure smooth delivery of complex features, define backend architecture and tech stack for a product area.
- Optimise Operations: Improve performance, reliability, scalability, and security for backend systems.
- Collaborate & Influence: Identify collaboration opportunities and influence the wider technical roadmap across global engineering teams.
- Mentor & Hire: Provide technical guidance to colleagues and conduct engineering interviews to scale the team.
What You'll Need to Thrive
- Proficiency in AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor).
- Strong Engineering Principles: Pride in writing readable, well-designed, and well-tested software.
- Backend Expertise: Significant experience with web-based applications (using Go, Ruby/Rails, Python, Scala, and Rust).
- Data Proficiency: Practical experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL backends like Redis, DynamoDB, or ElasticSearch.
- Systems at Scale: Proven ability to manage web architecture at scale (handling 20krpm and above).
- Technical Leadership: Experience breaking down large pieces of work and guiding implementation choices for a team of engineers.
