PhD Machine Learning Internship 2027 (USA)

Pinterest is looking for a PhD Machine Learning Intern for 2027 in the USA.

As a machine learning intern at Pinterest, you'll work on building personalized experiences to help users create a life they love. You'll contribute to cutting-edge research in machine learning and artificial intelligence, working on areas such as image recognition, user modeling, recommender systems, search, ads, ranking, natural language processing, neural networks, personalization, graph representation learning, and big data analytics.

Responsibilities

• Lead your own project from start to finish, contributing to cutting-edge research in machine learning and artificial intelligence
• Gain hands-on experience with production ML systems, including algorithmic research, infrastructure, data engineering, training, inference, and product
• Leverage frontier AI tools and agents to accelerate engineering implementation
• Validate AI-generated outputs through testing, code review, and critical thinking
• Use AI to better understand unfamiliar code, investigate bugs, and summarize technical context or documentation
• Write clean, efficient, and sustainable code
• Take proactive ownership over the completion and quality of your tasks and project

Requirements

• Working towards a PhD in Computer Science, ML, NLP, Statistics, Information Sciences, or a related field
• Proficiency in at least one systems language (Java, C++, Python) or one ML framework (Tensorflow, Pytorch, MLFlow)
• Proficiency with AI-native engineering, including the design of agent-friendly codebases
• Strong critical thinking when working with AI-generated suggestions
• Experience in research and in solving analytical problems
• Strong communicator and team player

Preferred Qualifications

• Publications in machine learning, AI, data science, data analytics, statistics, or related technical fields
• Interest in research and in applying ML to impactful real-world problems

Internship Details

• 12-week paid internship
• Fixed start dates in May or June 2027
• Locations: San Francisco, Palo Alto, New York, or Seattle offices (remote or hybrid)
• Salary: $12,100 monthly
