Staff Software Engineer, PEO Benefits

At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy by handling the hard stuff , payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR , so owners can focus on their craft and customers.

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our PEO Benefits team. As a key player in our engineering team, you'll help build systems for our Professional Employer Organization (PEO) and Benefits offering, which includes a national Master Health Plan that can reduce healthcare costs for small businesses by 20-25% through pooled purchasing power.

Responsibilities:

• Design, build, and test the Gusto PEO Benefits experience, including benefits shopping and plan-recommendation flows, carrier integrations, and automation tools.
• Mentor other engineers to solve complex technical problems.
• Scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications in the world.
• Collaborate with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to understand customer pain points and develop solutions.
• Build products that customers genuinely love.

Requirements:

• 8+ years of software development experience.
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems.
• Experience driving large, cross-functional projects end-to-end.
• Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development.
• Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks.
• Ability to mentor engineers.
• Experience in or interest working in Ruby on Rails.
• Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment.
• Ability to build well-structured, maintainable code.
• Effective communication across engineering teams and with business stakeholders.

Salary: $163,000–$204,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $197,000–$247,000 for San Francisco & New York.
