Description
At Ford Motor Company, you will work as a Product Development Engineer - Hatches, Locks & Mechanisms. In this position, you will lead the design, validation, release, and production implementation of closure hardware systems , handles, latches, locks, strikers, hinges, door checks, and the manual and powered mechanisms used in hoods, front trunks (frunks), side doors, tailgates, liftgates, and decklids.
You will own the complete product lifecycle , concept development and design feasibility, Design Validation (DV), Product Validation (PV), Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), manufacturing launch, and ongoing production support. Throughout, you will establish and document compliance with performance, safety, durability, and quality targets; with applicable global closure safety regulations; and with emerging emergency-egress expectations for electronic latch and flush handle systems on electrified and software-defined vehicles.
You will work closely with Body Engineering, Design Studio, CAE, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, and supplier partners to resolve technical challenges, implement engineering changes, and deliver closure systems that meet program objectives for quality, cost, mass, and timing.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading HLM system design, development, and integration with cross-functional teams and suppliers
- Applying the Global Product Development System (GPDS) to plan, schedule, and execute engineering deliverables
- Evaluating, packaging, and validating all HLM component and vehicle-level interfaces
- Performing, reviewing, and approving technical analyses
- Reviewing and approving CAD models, drawings, and supplier design data
- Identifying and driving functionality, reliability, cost, and mass optimization opportunities
You will also be responsible for release and documentation, validation and quality, launch and supplier engagement, post-launch and current model support, and collaboration and communication.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- 2+ years of engineering experience in the design, development, validation, or launch of mechanical products or systems
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: automotive latching or closure systems, automotive Design & Release (D&R) or product engineering in body structure systems, seat structures and seating mechanisms, aerospace mechanical systems, agricultural, construction, industrial, or oil and gas mechanisms, heavy-duty vehicle mechanical systems
- Proficiency with CAD and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools such as CATIA, Teamcenter, 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX), or equivalent
Preferred qualifications include:
- A Master's degree (MEng or MS) in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- Experience with the design and release of latching mechanisms, closure systems, or related mechanical applications
- Working knowledge of closure safety regulations
- Experience with mechatronic and software-integrated mechanical products
- Working knowledge of materials engineering, manufacturing processes, dimensional management, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
