Description

The Health, Safety, and Environmental Intern supports the HSE team in promoting a safe, healthy, compliant, and environmentally responsible workplace; this role provides hands-on experience with occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental compliance, emergency preparedness, employee engagement, data tracking, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with HSE program implementation, documentation, inspections, audits, and follow-up activities;
  • Support hazard identification, risk assessments, job safety analyses, and corrective action tracking;
  • Help review and improve emergency preparedness materials, including evacuation procedures, take-cover information, maps, drills, and visitor guidance;
  • Participate in safety inspections, lab or facility walkthroughs, and compliance verification activities;
  • Support high-risk work programs such as confined space, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, hot work, elevated work, mobile equipment, and contractor safety;
  • Assist with environmental programs such as waste management, spill prevention, sustainability initiatives, environmental inspections, and regulatory documentation;
  • Compile, organize, and analyze HSE data to support metrics, dashboards, reports, and continuous improvement efforts;
  • Help develop or update training materials, communications, standard work documents, procedures, and employee engagement resources;
  • Participate in incident prevention activities, employee awareness campaigns, and HSE events;
  • Work collaboratively with HSE professionals, site personnel, operations teams, contractors, and subject matter experts to support a strong safety and environmental culture.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Public Health, Engineering, or a related field;
  • Completion of sophomore or junior year preferred, but not required;
  • Coursework or interest in occupational safety, environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, emergency preparedness, risk management, or sustainability is beneficial;
  • Strong interest in health, safety, environmental protection, and continuous improvement;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team after receiving direction;
  • Good organization, time management, attention to detail, and follow-through;
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills;
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the ability to learn new systems or software tools;
  • Comfortable collecting information, organizing data, identifying trends, and summarizing findings;
  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, take initiative, and support practical solutions;
  • Ability to maintain professionalism.

Compensation and Benefits Employees can expect to be paid a salary of approximately between $22.75 to $47.75. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission. Additional benefits may include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc.
